Our next thing: Catan World

August 20th, 2012

The hardest thing in the world (for me at least) is to be working on something amazing and NOT BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT IT.

"That Battleship movie was awful."

But after months of labor, we can finally talk about what we’ve been building for Goko. It’s called Catan World, and we’re pretty proud of what we’ve accomplished. Imagine Settlers of Catan, writ large across an infinitely large world filled with tens and hundreds of thousands of islands.  Players explore the world using sailing expeditions, rolling back the fog of the undiscovered, expanding their realm by discovering and colonizing new islands, and improving their abilities as they level up through access to better technologies.  And that’s just to start.

Even the robber looks good!

In order to bring such a giant project to life, we’ve partnered with Goko – they have a clear vision for where HTML5 can take the video game industry, and a passion for the same kinds of games we like to play.  You can expect to see Catan World on Goko Games when it releases later this year, as well as in the iOS app store and Google Play store for both tablets and phones.  We had the privilege of demonstrating the game to an appreciative crowd at GenCon last week, along with other Goko launch titles, and the response was fantastic.

I couldn’t be prouder of what our small team has accomplished over the last 6 months – as one might imagine, we’ve spent a fair amount of time inventing the future. One of our stated goals here at Massively Fun is to do everything we can to make the Web the next great gaming platform, and to that end you can expect to see us sharing more information about the technology behind Catan World in the coming weeks and months.  If you’re in Seattle, come to the JavaScript Game Development meetup this Thursday to hear the team talk about the game and the underlying engine, Churchill.  And keep an eye on our Github Page, as you never know what fun bits may show up there…

Interested in getting early access to the Catan World beta?  Head over to our signup page and we’ll contact you shortly.  We have plenty of work left to get things exactly right, and your feedback is a key part of the process.
